ChatGPT can improve a resume a great deal — if you treat it as an editor working from your facts, not a writer inventing a candidate. This guide gives you a step-by-step workflow for using ChatGPT to improve your resume, from privacy settings to the final check.

The free version is enough for everything here. Features and settings names change from time to time; the ones mentioned below are described as they appear at the time of writing.

Step 0: Sort out privacy first

A resume contains personal data, and conversations with ChatGPT may be stored and, depending on your settings, used to improve OpenAI's models. Before you paste anything:

  • Remove your street address and phone number. Replace them with placeholders; add them back in your document at the end.
  • Remove anything confidential about current or former employers: client names, internal figures that are not public.
  • Check the data controls in ChatGPT's settings, where you can choose whether your conversations help improve the model.
  • Consider a Temporary Chat, which OpenAI says is not saved to your history or used to train models, for sessions you would rather not keep.

Step 1: Give it the right material

ChatGPT's output is only as good as your input. Before the first prompt, gather:

  1. Your current resume, as plain text.
  2. A brag list: projects, numbers, praise, problems you solved — anything that did not make it onto the resume. Rough notes are fine.
  3. One or two target job descriptions, if you are aiming at a particular role.

The brag list does more to improve the result than any prompt. ChatGPT cannot know you cut processing time in half unless you tell it.

Step 2: Set the ground rules

Open a new chat and start with the rules for the whole session:

I want help improving my resume. For this whole conversation: only use facts I give you. Do not invent employers, skills, tools, numbers, responsibilities or results, and do not make my wording stronger than what I say — "helped with" must not become "led". If a number would help, ask me for it instead of guessing. Write in plain, specific language with no buzzwords.

If you use ChatGPT for job searching often, you can put a shorter version in its custom instructions (under personalisation in the settings) so it applies to every new chat.

Step 3: Work section by section

Do not paste the whole resume and say "improve this". You will get a fluent, generic rewrite of everything at once, and no way to tell which changes are real improvements. Work in this order instead.

Bullets first

Here is one job from my resume, and my notes about what I did there. Rewrite the bullets as achievements — action, what I did, result or scale. Use only what is in my notes; where a number would help and I haven't given one, write [NUMBER?]. [paste job + notes]

Do one job at a time. Accept, reject or edit each bullet yourself.

Then the summary

Based only on the improved resume below, write three different 2–3 line summaries for [target role]. No buzzwords such as "results-driven" or "passionate".

Then the skills section

From my resume and notes, list the skills I have clearly demonstrated, grouped sensibly. Flag any skill that appears in my skills list but has no evidence anywhere in my experience.

Then tailor for a specific job

Step 4: Make it sound like you

ChatGPT's default style has recognisable habits — and recruiters recognise them. Ask it to check its own work:

Review the resume below for phrases that sound generic or machine-written: buzzwords, vague claims, stiff formality, bullets that all follow the same pattern. Suggest a plainer version of each. Do not add anything new.

Step 5: Final checks

  1. Honesty audit: ask ChatGPT to compare the new version with your original and list every claim that is stronger than the original supports. Check each one.
  2. Recruiter skim: ask it to play a recruiter with six seconds to scan the resume and report what they noticed and what they missed.
  3. Formatting: ChatGPT cannot see your document's layout. Format it yourself in a single column with standard headings — see our ATS resume formatting guide.

ChatGPT habits that help

  • One chat per job application, so the job description stays in view.
  • Use a Project, if your plan offers them, to keep your master resume and brag list available across job-search chats.
  • Ask for options. "Give me three versions" keeps you choosing rather than accepting.
  • Correct it plainly. "That's not accurate — I supported the project, I didn't lead it" is all it needs.

Mistakes that make resumes worse

  • Accepting a whole rewritten resume in one go.
  • Letting it add a skill because the job description mentions it.
  • Keeping its numbers when you did not supply them.
  • Pasting its formatting — tables, columns, emoji bullets — straight into your document.
  • Using the same generic summary for every application.
